This year's annual caricature convention was a very special one. The International Society of Caricature Artists celebrated it's 20 anniversary at the Tradewinds Resort on St. Pete Beach, Florida. Over 125 artists attended and competed for the top awards in the caricature business. This was my first convention in 6 years in which I was simply an attendee after serving on the board since 2005. It was nice to have time to draw for a change as well as get drawn by many other talented artists. My theme for my gallery this year was "If I were Batman...". The samples shown here are some funny versions of a few artist friends of mine who have also worked for Goofy Faces in the past.
It's officially time to get excited for this year's annual ISCA caricature convention in St. Pete Beach, November 13th to the 18th! This marks the 20th anniversary of the one and only official caricature convention in the world.
Check this awesome article in WIRED Magazine about facial recognition and how caricature artists have it all figured out, written by Ben Austen. You can also download it as a PDF.
One of the perks of being the president of ISCA [International Society of Caricature Artists], is that I get to meet so many gifted artists who are willing to draw me during our annual convention. Here is a small sample of the caricatures of me that I brought home from the convention this year. Top left was illustrated by Fred Harper. Top right is Court Jones. Lower left is Sam Viviano from MAD Magazine. Bottom right is from Tom Richmond who also illustrates for MAD Magazine. The originals are much larger than these blog versions. I will keep them and add them to my growing collection!
Last week was the International Society of Caricature Artists annual caricature convention. Over 230 artists from 10 different countries competed in over 13 categories for top honors including caricaturist of the year. My dear friend and ISCA Vice President, Glenn Ferguson was voted caricaturist of the year and was awarded the Golden Nosey. Congrats to Glenn! Next year- Las Vegas!
In case anyone doesn't know me, I'm Glenn Ferguson, Vice-President of the International Society of Caricature Artists(ISCA). Robert and I have been working closely in this organization for over 5 years on the board of directors, and Robert has been so very gracious to yield to me to work my tail off at drawing at each and every ISCA convention and helping me and each other to get all of our responsibilities accomplished. After 6 years of coming in 3rd,3rd,3rd,2nd, and 2nd again, I have finally reached 1st place and earned my 1st Place Golden Nosey award. Although it has been hard work, and a long journey at that, it has been a thrill the entire way, and it has been an absolute pleasure serving with Robert. We shall do it again for 2010 and I will return as a Master caricaturist, but we will again enjoy every step of the way on putting together a fantastic show. Thanks again Robert.
Last week, I had the pleasure of welcoming 4 outstanding artists from MAD Magazine at this year's annual ISCA caricature convention. Pictured here from left to right are Herman Meija, Sam Viviano, myself, Mark Frederickson and Tom Richmond. Each gave wonderful presentations about their art and careers and lots of anecdotes about working for MAD Magazine. This year's annual convention took place at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio. Tom and Sam were even kind enough to draw me during the convention which I will post here separately.
